Every other week, Staff Reporter Jillian Morabito showcases some of the tunes you should be tuning in to. Here are her picks for your new Must Listen Playlist:

"Riptide" by Vance Joy

Words cannot express how addicting and well-done “Riptide” by Vance Joy is. The song is the perfect indie-pop jam that is guaranteed to linger in your head. The track is subtly sarcastic as a whole, with references to Michelle Pfeiffer and knowing his lover is going to sing the words wrong.

As if the song isn’t flawless enough, for once, there is a music video that actually makes sense, following the lyrics exactly. Sadly, this track is not on Spotify or US iTunes, so listen to it 74 times on Youtube like I did. Vance Joy also recently released his EP “God Loves You When You’re Dancing.” So for days when you’ve just about had it with every song KIIS FM plays (basically every day), be sure to check out Liberation Music Australia for more on Vance Joy and similar artists.

"Diane Young" by Vampire Weekend

They’re baaack. After a 3 year hiatus, Vampire Weekend is releasing a new album on May 14th. Their new single, “Diane Young,” is as addicting as previous hits such as “A-Punk” and “Holiday.”

The song also repeats the word “baby” perhaps as much as LMFAO repeats “shots.” But the best line by far has to be “You’ve got the luck of a Kennedy.” It’s a subtle, yet clever remark that fits Vampire Weekend’s wit. Catch them on SNL on May 11th with Kristen Wiig.

"Evening Ceremony" by Active Child

Beautiful is the only way to describe “Evening Ceremony.” Emotion is felt in every beat and echo. However, it pains me that it is on the “Host” soundtrack, and therefore associated with a Stephanie Meyer production.

As long as she doesn’t use it in a corny montage, I suppose it’ll pass because this song is does more than tug at your heartstrings—it rips them out. It is haunting. It is raw. It is perfect.

"Bottled Affection" by Cold War Kids

Some critics think Cold War Kids reached their peak with “Robbers & Cowards.” While I do think it is their strongest album, don’t be too quick to brush off their recent work. Their latest album, “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts,” was released earlier this month. Strong tracks include single “Miracle Mile” and “Jailbirds.”

However, “Bottled Affection,” I believe, is an underrated song. The song is tragic really—“You got my attention / All I’ve been is bottled affection.” She must’ve been quite the manipulator. Personally, I think the acoustic version (included below) is laced with far more emotion than the album version. Cold War Kids plays at the Fonda on May 24th.

"Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel

If you’re a '90s movie enthusiast like some of us, you may remember this song as the highlight of “Vanilla Sky” (AKA one of the only films Tom Cruise did right). The scene where the innocent Penelope Cruz basically calls the other Cruise an arrogant philanderer (was she wrong?) is adorable, even with her thick accent and his crazy eyes. (Unfortunately, Penny didn’t pass the Scientology test, and with that, their romance ended in real life so she basically dodged a bullet.)

Luckily for us, the song lives on! It was actually written in the late seventies and has been covered by a copious amount of people. It was also featured in the Razzie worthy film “In Good Company.” Inspired by a spiritual experience, this Peter Gabriel track is a bit cheesy and the music video is kind of like they just invested in editing technology (it was made 40 years ago) and then went to town with it (i.e. the cabbage patch dress). However, the invigorating beat is motivating to play while accomplishing any task at hand.
