The U.S. Postal Service said Wednesday it would no longer continue with its plan to end Saturday mail delivery this summer, instead saying the Congress stopgap budget gave it no choice.

“The board believes that Congress has left it with no choice but to delay this implementation at this time,” the board said in the statement. “The board also wants to ensure that customers of the Postal Service are not unduly burdened by ongoing uncertainties and are able to adjust their business plans accordingly.”

The U.S. Postal Service unveiled its plan to discontinue Saturday mail back in February, with a set start date in August.

Despite the agency's attempt to save $2 billion annually, a new funding plan set forth by Congress includes language requiring six days of delivery. However, some representatives argue the Postal Service's decision to continue with parcel delivery on Saturdays would be enough to fulfill the mandate.

The Postal Service board said it will continue to work toward an agency overhaul, including an end to Saturday mail in the future.
