Two men were arrested Monday for plotting to derail a train en route from Canada to the U.S. on Monday. The two men, who are suspected of receiving support from an Al-Qaeda organization to carry out “Al-Qaeda-inspired” attacks were arrested early Monday morning by Royal Canadian Mountain Police.

Rep. Peter King chairman of the counterterrorism and intelligence sub committee told CNN Monday that the train was expected to complete the route from Canada to the U.S. and Canadian Police arrested Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35 based off the conspiracy to follow through with the attack and commit murder.

The attack, which was meant to harm people traveling on the VIA Rail train, was disrupted after an internal investigation into the two arrested presented evidence not only of their proposed attack but also connection and support from terrorist groups.

According to CNN the CBC reported the investigation had been a cross-border operation that involved Canadian law enforcement, the U.S. and the FBI which, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported an ongoing investigation over the past year. Throughout the year it was confirmed that the two men spent time monitoring railways in the Canada area specifically focusing on Toronto. According to CNN Police Capt. Jennifer Strackan said,

"We are alleging these two individuals took steps and conducted activities to conduct a terrorist attack," she said, The plot was planned to derail the train in the Toronto are and Strackan said, "They watched trains and railways in the greater Toronto area."

Although authorities confirmed the two suspects were not Canadian citizens they declined to state what their nationality was or how they had come to Canada.
