Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that the Senate will "take a pause" from consideration of new gun control legislation regarding background checks. However, he continued that "we should make no mistake: This debate is not over, in fact this fight is just beginning."

Reid remarked that after speaking with President Obama, "He and I agree that the best way to keep working toward passing a background check bill is to hit a pause and freeze the background-check bill where it is."

The decision comes after the Senate defeated President Obama's many gun control proposals. Reid said the Senate would return to the background check bill later on.
