Every other week, writer Mara Hyman takes a look at the buzzworthy short films coming from the music video universe. Here are her latest picks:

PSY - "Gentleman"

The phenomena known as PSY is back with his next single, "Gentleman," which is a follow-up to his mega-hit "Gangnam Style." There's no question that he is popular—in fact, his video for this song broke a YouTube record for the most views in 24 hours, approximately 20 million, which beat Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend."

"Gentleman" has a very similar beat and vibe to "Gangnam Style" and is very repetitive. The video, like "Gangnam Style," is very funny but this time he seems to poke fun at people who say they're gentleman but don't act like it. It also incorporates a few new dance moves that are surprisingly more basic than the first. At the very end the video immediately transitions into some behind the scenes footage where we see PSY goofing off in front of the camera. Do you like his new song or will he forever remain a one hit wonder?

Demi Lovato - "Heart Attack"

Demi Lovato recently released the video for her single "Heart Attack," which is very upbeat and takes her back to the pop-rock feel of her very first album. The song takes on many octaves and really lets Demi show off her powerhouse of a voice.

The music video is very artsy and strays from a more literal interpretation of the song (such as someone having a heart attack). It plays a lot with the black and white contrast, going back and forth between Demi and her bandmates rocking out and Demi with arms covered in paint that suddenly gets all over her. At the very beginning and end we also see a face emerging from a pool of paint which is a bit creepy—what do you think it represents? Are you satisfied with the video?

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton - "Can't Hold Us"

Coming off of the huge success of "Thrift Shop," Macklemore is back with "Can't Hold Us," which is just as catchy but stands on its own. Right from the beginning the song has a hard-hitting quality due to the strong percussion.  Macklemore does his thing per usual with dynamic lyrics.

The video is really interesting as it pans between different scenes of Macklemore traveling to different places - we see him on a ship, walking with a camel, and on a living room set being pulled by a truck. One thing that most Trojans will immediately recognize is that parts of the video were shot at USC! At about 2 minutes in, we see Macklemore walking with a camel and partying outside near the Row with a bunch of people. The credits also drag out for a long time as we see a cool wide shot of the truck carrying Macklemore going into the distance. Are you surprised the video came out so late after the song's release?

Anna Kendrick - "Cups" (Pitch Perfect's "When I'm Gone")

If you're a fan of the movie "Pitch Perfect," you'll immediately recognize this song as Anna Kendrick's character's audition song in front of the Barden Bellas. Released soon before Rebel Wilson's hosting gig and the Pitch Perfect reunion on the MTV Movie Awards, Anna Kendrick is back with an interesting new take on the song.

With added instruments, "Cups" has a much fuller sound. The video surprisingly has nothing to do with "Pitch Perfect" but gives the song a different setting: a diner. We see Anna working at the diner playing with the cup and, as she waits on customers, gradually the entire restaurant takes part in the cup game. It's a really interesting concept visually that focuses on the popularity of the cup game as equally as the song itself. While Anna claims she has no plans to continue with music any time soon, let's hope so! Should she continue with music or stick to acting?

Juliet Simms - "Wild Child"

You might recognize Juliet Simms as a finalist on Season 2 of "The Voice." Now, she's back with her first single which fits her perfectly with a pop-rock edge.

While it sounds a bit too mainstream and over-produced, Juliet still gets to show off her vocals and the chorus is very catchy. In the video we see Juliet Simms going out with her friends, hustling at a game of pool, and lots of animal masks. The video was released surprisingly late after her run on "The Voice" and her performance of the same song on the show this past fall. What do you think about Juliet?
