A campus police officer was fatally shot at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge Thursday night, CNN reports.

Two months after reports of a gunman on the Cambridge campus turned out to be a hoax, Massachusetts Institute of Technology went into lockdown late Thursday night when the officer was shot by an unknown suspect.

The university has requested that students and locals stay away from the area of the shooting, as the situation remains active and dangerous.

The police officer has since died from his injuries, according to state police.
