The Jonas Brothers Are Back: Music Video Roundup
Every other week, writer Mara Hyman takes a look at the buzzworthy short films coming from the music video universe. Here are her latest picks:
Jonas Brothers - "Pom Poms"
Move over Justin Bieber, the original JBs are back! After a three year hiatus in which Nick went on Broadway, Joe tried a solo career and Kevin became a reality star alongside his wife on "Married to Jonas," they're back as a group with their first single "Pom Poms" off of their long-awaited album.
The song is pretty cheesy, but at the same time it has a rock edge and slightly more mature sound for the band, especially compared to their first hits like "Year 3000." Musically it pulls influence from a classic marching band style woven in between. The video takes place on a high school football field where we see the brothers jamming out and scantily-clad ladies dancing. It's pretty clear that they're trying to appeal to a male fan base. The video ends with a marching band playing the chorus of the song. Are you happy with the Jonas Brothers' return?
Ariana Grande feat. Mac Miller - "The Way"
Also in the pop world, Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande released her video for the single "The Way". The song is pretty catchy and lets Grande show off her vocals. She even shows her higher register and whistle tone towards the end which have left some comparing her to a young Mariah Carey. In the video we see Ariana and Mac being flirtatious, playing with balloons and taking photos of one another... let's just say that if they're not dating, I'd be extremely surprised. The video also incorporates a cool effect where Ariana stands in front of images projected onto her and a screen behind her. Do you like the Ariana Grande and Mac Miller pairing, both in the song and in real life?
Chris Brown - "Fine China"
Whether you're a fan of his or not, it's safe to say that Chris Brown has dominated in his newest single "Fine China." The song is very smooth and a bit jazzy, allowing Chris to show off his higher register. The video stands out and is very obviously an homage to Michael Jackson and his iconic movie-style music videos.
It starts out with a girl arguing with her father who doesn't like Chris, but he then gets her out of the house and takes her out for the night until the father shows up with his "gang." The video plays a lot with lights, shadows and special effects, especially in the fighting scene. There are also a lot of cool dance sequences with moves similar to Michael Jackson's style. Are you pleased with Chris Brown's tribute to Michael, or is it too copy cat?
The Band Perry - "Done"
The leading country band is back with a new catchy single. As an anthemic break-up song, it's a much different style for them. The song is more edgy and spunky, especially compared with their more sad but beautiful song "If I Die Young." The video has an interesting concept with a real-life chess game, as two teams in black and white battle it out on a life-sized chess board and the white team wins in the end. It's clear that The Band Perry had a lot of fun making the video. Are you surprised to see this side of the band?
Tate Stevens - "Power of a Love Song"
You might recognize Tate Stevens as the winner of the second season of "The X Factor USA." The country singer is back with his second single, "Power of a Love Song," which is a powerful country ballad about the role of music in a relationship. It's a touching song and Tate sings it beautifully—he was rightfully the winner of "X Factor"! The video is also really sweet and even emotional, taking the viewer through the journey of a couple through the years until the end, where the man is much older and his wife passed away. The linear part of the video is the spinning record, which is shown at the beginning and the very end. Are you going to listen to more of Tate Stevens?
