An Israeli airstrike on a motorcycle in Gaza on Tuesday left one man dead, who authorities say was a top militant in an al-Qaida-influenced group responsible for a recent rocket attack on southern Israel.

According to Gaza medical officials the airstrike killed the motorcycle passenger, Haitham Mishal, and wounded both the driver and a bystander.

In a statement, Israeli military officials said that Mishal had been a member of in the Mujahideen Shura Council, a shady al-Qaida inspired group, who was responsible for the April 17 rocket attack on the southern Israeli resort city of Eilat as well other violent attacks.

The airstrike came just days after a fatal stabbing of an Israeli settler in the West Bank by a Palestinian man—the first attack on an Israeli by a Palestinian in a year.

“We hit today one of those involved in the despicable rocket fire on Eilat. I said that we would not be quiet over that,” The Associated Press reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday.

The deadly airstrike is the first by the Israeli military since the Egyptian-brokered peace agreement that ended a eight days of deadly rocket exchange between Hamas and Israel last November.
