Los Angeles mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti criticized Wendy Greuel for her ties to the Department of Water and Power during a heated debate Monday night hosted at the University of Southern California, alleging that she could not be an "independent" mayor because of the donations she has recieved.

The debate, which was hosted by NBC4, Telemundo52, KPCC, and USC Sol Price School of Public Policy, forced Greuel, the current Los Angeles City Controller, to go on the defensive and attack Garcetti in return for alleged ethic violations.

"I can be a mayor that is independent," responded Garcetti, also claiming that Greuel's attacks were "that of a desparate campaign."

The debate covered topics such as current Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's new proposed budget plan, which both candidates at some level support, and education in the Los Angeles Unified School district.

"It should not depend on your zipcode what education you get in LA," said Greuel, who also said she would increase spending in classrooms and try to involve parents more.

Both Garcetti and Greuel also talked about expanding the public transportation system, but also improving conditions for pedestrians and bikers.

"Los Angeles is choked up with traffic," said Greuel.

Although asked point-blank about the Christopher Dorner incident with the Los Angeles Police Department, neither would speak openly about the subject nor openly criticize the LAPD for their actions.

The debate ended with a question about the candidates' respective leadership styles, and how that would distinguish the two from one another.

"It's not about a list of who's endorsing you," said Garcetti, directly attacking Greuel. "I'm willing to make the tough decisions."

Greuel similarly attacked Garcetti with her final summation.

"I may not be the best campaigner but I'm a strong leader," said Greuel.
