The fifth annual Shorty Awards wrapped up tonight at the TimesCenter in New York City, honoring the best creators of short content creators and social media stars across the world.

The ceremony recognizes the people and organizations producing real-time short content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Foursquare and the rest of the social media web. Former winners include Conan O'Brien, Ricky Gervais and NASA, to name a few.

Just three months after the Short Awards premiered in 2008, shortyawards.com had 13.5 million pageviews and garnered over 20 million unique monthly visitors.

This year's Shorty Awards featured 65 fan-nominated categories and seven specially selected categories. Fans had from Jan. 7 to Feb. 8 to tweet their picks, and The Shorty Awards received over 1.8 million tweet-nominations. The top six vote-getters became finalists.

The categories are specific and extensive, stretching from Fandom, Best Fake Account, YouTube Star, Best GIF maker, Best One Direction Account, to best charity, journalist and sports team.

This year's ceremony, streamed live and hosted by web actress Felicia Day, honored big names like singer Demi Lovato, John Green, Twitter, Pretty Little Liars, CNN, Texts with Hilary, as well as many other lesser known web stars for their social media presence.

Shorty winners are determined by members of Real-Time Academy, which includes Craigslist Founder Craig Newmark, MC Hammer, Charlie Sheen, Apple co-funderSteve Wozniak and Alyssa Milano.
