Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy signed a strict new set of gun control laws Thursday, 12 hours after the Connecticut state legislature first approved the bills.

Malloy hopes the nation can come together, like Connecticut did, to support gun control. "This is a profoundly emotional day, I think, for everyone in this room. We have come together in a way that relatively few places in our nation have demonstrated the ability to do...Our leaders in Washington are so divided. There's no excuse," said the Democratic governor.

The new legislation is being referred to as the toughest set of gun control laws in the United States.

According to CNN, Connecticut is now the third state to pass tough gun control legislation since the Sandy Hook shooting in December. The other states are New York and Colorado.

President Obama, reported the Huffington Post, is scheduled to visit Connecticut Monday to praise the state's new laws and garner support for the hotly debated gun legislation proposals in Congress.
