This year’s Tribeca Film Festival brought a different breed of celebrity to the red carpet.

Internet cat celebrity, Lil Bub, strutted the carpet for the premiere of his film, “Lil Bub and Friendz.”

The documentary, produced by Andy Capper and Juliette Eisner of the hip, cultural-hub news outlet VICE, explores the Internet’s obsession with cats from Lil Bub to Grumpy Cat

Lil Bub’s trademark cartoon-like eyes and perpetual loose tongue captured a huge Internet audience after her owner, Mike Bridavsky, posted a series of pictures and videos documenting the caricature cat.

Mike’s life took a drastic turn for the better as Lil Bub’s Internet fame soared.  He began earning advertising fees from Lil Bub’s YouTube Channel, which allowed him to pay off the six months of debt he had racked up from his music studio.  Mike used the funds to continue spearheading Bub’s Internet presence with more photos, and the development of Bub swag.

Internet cats mean serious business. With millions of views propelling them to international fame, the owners are able to capitalize on that fame, bringing in some serious cash. If that sounds crazy, you’d be shocked to find out a meme manager exists to manage these cat-lebrities. Ben Lashes, self-proclaimed “meme manager,” manages Grumpy Cat, Nyan Cat, and several human meme stars.

The documentary is more than a commentary on America’s feline fascination and the monetization of Internet cats. The film showcases the Internet’s ability to give cat lovers the opportunity to connect and share.

“She brings joy to hundreds of thousands of people, that’s her mission”, said Mike. “I just put pictures of her on the Internet, and people fell in love with her.”

Lil Bub did more than make America laugh, she also brought about positive change. Mike donates some of the revenue from her Internet stardom to animal rescue charities and pet adoption centers throughout the country.

What’s next for Lil Bub? Well, word around town is that she is set to release her first book in September entitled, “Lil Bub’s Lil Book: The Extraordinary Life of the Most Amazing Cat on the Planet.” For more updates, check out Lil Bub’s website.
