35 Estimated Dead In Texas Explosion

As many as 35 people have died in a massive explosion that occurred at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas Wednesday night, CNN reports.

Among the dead are ten first responders—including five volunteer fire fighters, four emergency responders and one off-duty fire fighter from Dallas—to a fire that broke out at the plant shortly before the explosion.

CNN reports:

Earlier, Waco Police Sgt. William Patrick Swanton estimsted there were five to 15 people who died.

George Smith, West's director of emergency services, has said the death toll could spike to 60 or 70.

At least another 160 people have been injured.

On Thursday night, residents gathered at the Church of the Assumption in West to pay their respects to those who have died as well as pray for survivors. 

As of Thursday afternoon, authorities still had not determined what caused the explosion.
