Sen. Rand Paul's epic filibuster over drones finally came to an end at 12:39 a.m. EST Thursday, more than 12 hours after he took the floor. The Senate will now vote to confirm John Brennan for CIA director when it resumes at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Paul's colleague, newly elected Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, used some of his question time Wednesday to read Twitter messages supporting Paul. As the filibuster proceeded into double-digit hours, the Twitterverse was "blowing up" (as Cruz put it), reacting to this unexpected bit of late-night political theater.
