Neil Flowers, a 60-year-old screen writer from Los Angeles, voted today at Fire Station #15. The fire station, located just off the campus of the University of Southern California was the polling place designated for many students and residents living in the 90007 zip code.

Flowers, who has lived in Los Angeles for 14 years, believes that many more citizens should vote.

“Even in the mayoral elections, if you don’t vote, you get the government you deserve,” Flowers said.

Flowers voted for mayoral candidate Eric Garcetti although he admits he was relatively unversed on the mayoral candidates this year.

“The only reason I would vote for him is because the LA Times is recommending him and I often go with the LA Times,” Flowers said. “I’ve liked their decisions in the past when I have known the candidates. So that’s why I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt with this one.”

However, Flowers will not follow suit with the LA Times endorsement of a “No” vote on Proposition A, which aims to raise the city’s sales tax by half a percent. He is voting “Yes” because he believes the city needs more money.

“Even though I think the city wastes money, they need the revenue,” Flowers said. “I think it’s incumbent upon the citizens of Los Angeles who take advantage of the benefits that the city gives to people to make sure that the city is solvent.”
