Obama Receives Highest Israeli Civilian Honor

Israeli President Shimon Peres awarded President Obama the Medal of Distinction, Israel's highest civilian honor, The Washington Times reported Thursday.

Peres presented the award Thursday evening at a ceremonial dinner held at his residence in Obama's honor. The medal recognizes Obama's commitment to maintaining Israel's security and is the first honor of its kind to be bestowed upon a sitting president.

Last year, President Peres became the second Israeli in history to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest U.S. civilian honor. Obama described the prize as a testament to the friendship between the two nations.
