Cardinals remain divided over who should be pope, as the 115 eligible voters failed to find a successor to Benedict XVI Wednesday in the second day of the conclave.

Thousands gathered in St. Peter's Square, waiting for white smoke to pour out the chimney of the Sistine Chapel--the sign a new pope has been chosen. Yet, only black smoke billowed out, forcing the cardinals to continue with the voting process until at least two-thirds win support.

According to the LA Times, one voting session on Tuesday and two on Wednesday have shown support remains spread over several candidates. Speculation so far has pointed to Angelo Scola, the archbishop of Milan, as well as several from Brazil and the United States.

Benedict XVI's resignation last month was the first in over 6 centuries. He cited failing powers and infirmity as reasons for stepping down.

The Cardinals will break for lunch at the Vatican hotel and resume voting Wednesday afternoon.
