What is International Women's Day?

It's "a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future," according to internationalwomensday.com.

In this spirit, let's review some recent achievements of women in the USC community.

HELENE WINER

Winer graduated in '66 and quickly became part of an influential group of women in the Southern California art world, curating exhibitions which featured burgeoning art stars like William Wegman and John Baldessari. Her contributions were acknowledged at the recent show "It Happened at Pomona: Art at the Edge of Los Angeles 1969-1973."

CASSANDRA SANDERS-HOLLY

Sanders-Holly runs Leaps & Bounds Pediatric Therapy in Norco, CA., a clinic where children with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries and other challenges ride horses to help improve their sense of balance. Sanders-Holly, class of '06, also teaches at USC.

GERALDINE KNATZ

Knatz, who earned her M.S. in environmental engineering in '77 and her Ph.D in biological science in '79, became the first woman to hold the title of executive director of the Port of Los Angeles in 2006. She has been instrumental in creating green policy initiatives in California.

PAULA DANIELS

Daniels, class of '77, is the founding chair of the new L.A. Food Policy Council and Mayor Villaraigosa's senior advisor on food policy. This work entails increasing L.A. residents' access to healthy food.

NICOLA MARSH

Marsh is a cinematographer who shot "20 Feet From Stardom," which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. She graduated from the School of Cinematic Arts in 2006 and works on several reality TV shows.
