Abelardo De La Pena Jr., 59, creator of LatinoLA.com and resident of downtown Los Angeles, is a firm believer that the race for L.A.'s next mayor is an important one for voters to participate in.

“The race for mayor is very important for our city,” Pena said. “I think that the best person to become our new mayor is Eric Garcetti.”

Garcetti is running against city controller Wendy Greuel, former prosecutor Kevin James, councilwoman Jan Perry and former tech executive Emanuel Pleitez.

Pena, who is also a director of the Mexican Cultural Institute, said he believes that a great mayor has to have great communication and listening skills.

“Garcetti has experience from city council, so he knows what is going on in the city. His communication with the people shows that he is paying attention to what is going on around L.A.”

An L.A. native, Pena was born in Long Beach and grew up in the Wilmington area. Since 1999, Pena has served as the editor of his website, which gives anyone the opportunity to voice their opinion on Latino community issues.

At the polls Tuesday, Pena also voted for city attorney candidate Mike Feuer and city controller candidate Ron Galperin.

Of Mexican descent on his father's side, Garcetti is popular among the Latino community. A poll done by KABC-TV in January showed that 35 percent of his vote would be Latino.

Like most civilians in L.A., Pena has concerns about public transportation and the general health of the homeless population.

“I am very concerned about transportation accessibility in Los Angeles," he said. "It needs some improvement.”

Pena continued, “I’m worried, also, about the homeless population and their safety. The tuberculosis scare that happened in the city mostly involved the homeless population. Something has to be done about their safety as well.”
