With candidates spending nearly $3 million on their campaigns, Tuesday's L.A. race for city attorney is one of the most expensive non-mayoral contests in city politics history, KTLA reports.

Incumbent candidate Carmen Trutanich raised about half a million dollars for his campaign. According to records filed with the city Ethics Commission over the weekend, the city attorney received $68,818 in contributions from two independent efforts, L.A. Residents for Accountability to Support Carmen Trutanich for L.A. City Attorney 2013 and Citizens for Neighborhood Safety.

Candidate and former lawmaker Mike Feuer, who according to the L.A. Times is "ahead in fundraising and endorsements," has also received support from independent groups.

Greg Smith, a private attorney who has represented police officers and firefighters in lawsuits, had put over $700,000 into his race as of the end of last week. A fourth candidate, private attorney Noel Weiss, has not had the finances to mount a citywide campaign.

Despite the influx of campaign dollars, no one candidate has come out as the clear favorite in this race. A recent poll conducted by the L.A. Times and USC Sol Price School of Public Policy put Feuer in the lead, with 23.8 percent of votes, and Trutanich and Smith close behind. With none of the candidates likely to win a majority, the two top finishers will compete in a run-off election on May 21.
