One of the men accused of gang raping and fatally beating a woman on a New Delhi bus late last year has committed suicide, according to CNN.

Ram Singh hanged himself in a jail cell using a rope made from his clothes, the New York Times reported. Singh was one of five men charged with murder, rape and kidnapping in connection with the attack.

The five men on trial could race the death penalty if convicted. A 17-year-old sixth suspect will be tried separately in juvenile court.

The Dec. 16 assault on the 23-year-old woman led to angry protests across the country and calls for stricter laws dealing with sexual crimes against women. The victim died in a Singapore hospital in December.
