House Passes Spending Bill To Avoid Shutdown

The vote passed, 267-151, and included broad support from the GOP. Republicans favored the bill's ability to provide the Pentagon with more flexibility in implementing spending cuts by protecting high priority programs.
More than 50 Democrats voted in favor of the bill, but as a whole largely opposed it in order to give other federal agencies similar flexibility in making cuts.
The spending package is subject to $85 billion in across-the-board cuts for the fiscal year. Half must come from defense spending.
Members from the GOP and Democratic parties must find common ground before March 27 to avoid a government shutdown.
