As of Jan. 2012, about 36 percent of American adults were obese. America's high obesity rate is typically attributed to the abundance of fast food restaurants. Does it come as a surprise that 11 percent of American’s caloric intake is from fast food?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveyed about 11,000 adults from 2007 to 2010. The survey asked the subjects what they ate and drank during the past 24 hours. The study revealed that about 11 percent of American adults’ calories were fast food calories, which was about two percentage points lower than the previous time the survey was conduced from 2003 to 2006.

The study also found that young adults, ages 20 to 39, derive a large portion of their calories, about 15 percent, from fast food. This is a large percentage when compared to older adults, ages 60 and up, whose calories from fast food were about six percent.

Overall, the study found that income was not an important factor in determining people's daily caloric intake from fast food. However, income did play a factor among young adults, where daily calories from fast food dropped as income rose.

Sometimes, however, a stop for a quick lunch or dinner at a fast food restaurant seems unavoidable. If you are trying to be health conscious, there are some foods you should avoid when ordering at fast food restaurants.

Men's Health compiled a list of the 10 worst fast food meals in America. The 10 meals listed contain from 750 to 1,900 calories and range from 42 to 145 grams of fat.

This is not to say all fast food is bad for your health. Instead, it is meant to shed light on the idea that you need to be conscious of the choices you make when ordering at fast food restaurants. Generally some foods to avoid are: French fries, chicken nuggets, fried fish or chicken sandwiches, onion rings, special sauce, bacon, double burgers and cheese burgers. Also, trying to find substitutes, such as swapping out French fries for a salad or driking water instead of soda, can help improve your eating habits.

Choosing a healthier fast food restaurant can also help you make better eating choices. Among the healthier fast food restaurants are Panera Bread, Corner Bakery Cafe and Chipotle.

Not all fast food is unhealthy, but certain choices you make will decide whether your meals are healthy.
