Large retail stores and supermarkets in West Hollywood will be void of plastic bags come Wednesday with the city's plastic bag ban going into effect.

The ban, formally known as the Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance, will mean that stores of 10,000 square feet or more may not offer plastic bags and can instead offer paper bags at a 10 cent per bag cost to customers.

Stores that are smaller than 10,000 square feet will have until August 20, 2013 to be compliant with the ordinance.

West Hollywood is not the first city to ban plastic bags in Los Angeles County with Santa Monica, Long Beach, Calabasas and Malibu all having similar ordinances in effect.

The Los Angeles City Council voted last May to ban plastic bags, beginning the process of banning plastic bags at stores within Los Angeles city limits, though the ordinance has not yet gone into effect.
