This past weekend, Alex Nielsen and myself, Ross McDonald, headed out to the mountains to do a little mountain biking. The specific genre of biking we do is called downhill mountain biking- that is to say, there is no uphill. We had our local friends drive us up the mountain with our bikes and continued to hike up another half mile or so. Then, it's all downhill from there!

Grabbing brakes and leaning into the corners while going 30+ miles per hour takes plenty of practice. Dropping off the rocks and flying through the air requires a particular finesse of balance between the two wheels. Surprisingly, going faster helps the wheels track straight and pull you through technical sections of rocks and roots. This counter intuition is a common theme in our sport, but if you can get over the "Oh my gosh that's steep" feeling, the mountains are yours for conquering.

In our attempt to understand the physics behind this kind of biking, we also managed to enjoy our afternoon thoroughly filming this video and talking with the other people who enjoy our unique sport.
