U.S. Postal Service Cuts Saturday Mail

The U.S. Postal Service will halt Saturday mail delivery starting Aug. 1 in order to save nearly $2 billion annually, said the U.S. Postal Service Wednesday.

Package delivery, one of the only profitable outlets of the USPS, will continue its usual six day run. Traditional mail will only be delivered to homes and businesses through the five-day work week, but still route to the post office boxes on Saturday.

Post offices with Saturday hours will remain open.

This past November, the agency reported annual losses of $15.9 billion, more than triple the loss in the year prior. One of the biggest causes for the financial struggles include mandatory health care costs for future retirees, amounting to $11.1 billion in losses.
