An 8.0 magnitude quake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami that killed at least five people and destroyed villages within the region.

The quake triggered at least three aftershocks measuring above 6.0 magnitude. Shortly after, a three-foot wave slammed the town of Lata on the Santa Cruz Island.

Five deaths have been confirmed by Chris Rogers, a registered nurse at the Lata Hospita. Among the dead include one child, three elderly females and one elderly male.

A representative from the Solomon national disaster management office said the Lata airport had been damaged by the tsunami and four villages had been destroyed. Power outages have been reported throughout the area.

Despite calm conditions in the capital of Honiara, many residents have moved to higher ground as a precaution.
