A bus crash in San Bernardino County killed at least eight people Sunday night, with officials saying that the death toll will probably rise, according to CNN.

"It's a horrific scene," California Highway Patrol spokesman Mario Lopez told CNN. "Probably one of the worst ones I have seen in my career. There are victims inside the bus, outside the bus, personal belongings [everywhere]."

At least 42 were hurt in the crash, which happened in a mountainous area between Mentone and Forest Falls around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash. One spokeswoman said she heard the driver had trouble with the brakes.
