Why do you watch the Oscars? No wait, we know - for the fashion. But in between the ooh-ing and the ahh-ing, and the occasional "what the eff is that?!" it's hard to remember that there are people in those dresses. People with hair that has taken hours of prepping, primping, and last minute hair-spraying to make sure it is always in place. Whether it's obvious or not, hair can make or break an outfit. Let’s break down the most common choices for the 2013 Oscars Red Carpet.

One of the most ubiquitous styles this afternoon was classic 40s curls. With a side part, this sleek look complements any dress. Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Saldana, and Helen Hunt all embraced this hairstyle. Stacy Keibler joined this hair club as well, but with a shorter interpretation.

Big and voluminous hair also made a strong appearance on the red carpet. Maria Menounos did a straight-from-the-60s look, but she wasn’t the only woman with big hair. Melissa McCarthy, Adele, Norah Jones, Kate Capshaw, and Helena Bonham Carter all decided to make their mark.

Several actresses decided to go with the middle part, either with all their hair or just bangs. Kerry Washington, Marcia Gay Harden, and Catherine Zeta-Jones went straight down the middle. Jennifer Garner, Amy Adams, and Nicole Kidman all used a middle part to separate their shorter layers while having the rest of their hair up.

Then there were the women who decided to avoid all hairstyles by wearing the riskiest of them all: the short cut. Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Jane Fonda, and Halle Berry all rocked strong and short haircuts.

While repeated by fewer people, the part-less hairstyle still made a strong presence on the red carpet. With some volume on top and the rest of the hair tied up in the back, several actresses went with this look. Most notably: Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts, and Samantha Barks

In the guys’ corner, there was only one big trend: beards. From sloppy to scruffy, the men let all their facial hair out in all its glory. Paul Rudd, Jean Dujardin, Ben Affleck, George Clooney, Chris Evans, Hugh Jackman, Mark Boal, Tommy Lee Jones, Bryan Cranston, and Jason Clarke all brought it on the testosterone front.
