Chunks of metal and flesh flew through the air in the Daytona International Speedway this afternoon. A sprawling wreck involving 13 vechiles sent rookie driver Kyle Larson through the barrier between fans and the track in the final stretch of the competition. Eleven spectators have been confirmed as injured, and are currently receiving medical treatment from hospital staff in the Florida region (CNN).

Organizers of the event and race victor Tony Stewart have expressed their wishes to focus on the needs of those harmed at this time in lieu of traditional post-race festivities. Daytona officials have plans to continue operating events at the track tomorrow, pending an evaluation of the integrity and quality of safety precautions (Huffington Post).
