Well-connected Democrats have said that Chicago Mayor and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is considering running for president in 2016, The Daily Beast reports.

While it is unclear who raised the subject, Emanuel has reportedly been engaging in discussions with prominent Democratic Party donors and fundraisers about entering the presidential race if Hilary Clinton chooses not to.

Emanuel's press secretary has denied that the mayor "raised or entertained" the idea of joining in the White House run. Friends of the mayor have also expressed skepticism to the press about Emanuel running. Democratic strategist Paul Begala said that the mayor, whom he claims to speak to every day, never mentioned anything about the 2016 race.

"This is the first I've heard of it," he said. "That doesn't mean it didn't happen."
