World famous South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius was charged Thursday for the murder of his girlfriend.

Pistorius, also known as Blade Runner, made headlines in both the 2012 London Olympics and Paralypics when the double leg amputee won multiple medals in running. The Huffington Post is reporting that the  26 year old, who was recently named one of People Magazine's Sexiest Men Alive, is said to have shot his 30 year old girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Steenkamp was a model and was on the list of "100 Sexiest Women in the World" in FHM magazine for two years straight.

The circumstances leading up to the Valentine's day shooting have not been released, but the victim's body and a 9-mm pistol were found in Pistorius' home, according to the Associated Press. The New York Daily News is reporting that "Blade Runner" was previously investigated for allegations of domestic abuse. Steenkamp was an advocate and often spoke out against domestic violence. Some South African news outlets are claiming Pistorius mistakenly believed Steenkamp to be a burglar and accidentally shot her.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee released the following statement, "SASCOC, like the rest of the public, knows no more than what is in the public domain, which is there has been an alleged fatal shooting on the basis of a mistaken identity and an apparent assumption of a burglary. The organization is in no position to comment on the incident other than to say our deepest sympathy and condolences have been expressed to the families of all concerned."
