Coen Brothers To Script Angelina Jolie’s Next Film, “Unbroken”
The Coen brothers were chosen to script the historical drama on Louis Zamperini, an Olympic track star and World War II POW, for Universal Pictures.
Zamperini, once a track star who competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, went on to serve in the Air Force during World War II. His plane underwent an unfortunate accident in 1943 and he crashed in the Pacific. After a grueling 47 days stranded at sea, Zamperini washed ashore on a Japanese island and was held prisoner for two years. Today, he is alive, having survived torture at the hands of his enemies, at 96 years of age.
Hillenbrand’s book was a best-seller upon its release in 2010 and Universal has long since been trying to piece together an adaption for the big screen.
The film, originally to be directed by Francis Lawrence, was later picked up by Jolie in December of last year. She will direct and serve as co-producer alongside Matthew Baer and Erwin Stoff.
Jolie was reportedly picky when selecting the writers for “Unbroken” and eventually settled on the filmmaking duo, who have previously been nominated for five Academy Awards. They won two awards for “Fargo” and “No Country for Old Men.”
