The U.S.-based security firm Mandiant released a 74-page report Tuesday detailing the Chinese military's involvement in hacking into and stealing confidential data from several U.S. websites.

The report, which was backed by the New York Times, outlines how the People's Liberation Army housed an entire unit hackers on the outskirts of the Chinese city of Shanghai where they launched cyber attacks on U.S. corporations and the American government.

From the Los Angeles Times:

"Unit 61398 'has systematically stolen hundreds of terabytes of data from at least 141 organizations,' in diverse industries and mostly in the United States, said the report."

"China resolutely opposes hacking actions and has established relevant laws and regulations, and taken strict law enforcement measures to defend against online hacking activities,'' said a spokesman for the PLA on Tuesday.

Mandiant outlined in its report that the Chinese hackers compromised Telvent Canada, whose network has "remote access to more than 60 percent of oil and gas pipelines in North America.”

The Obama administration has not officially responded to the report, but is expected to make an announcement Tuesday that would improve readiness from such cyber attacks.
