One day after the United States accused the Chinese military of engaging in cyberwarfare against a handful of American agencies, China's defense ministry issued a "strong denial" against the claim.

According to the NY Times, the ministry said the report, which classified a Shanghai unit as one of the most aggressive computer hacking operations in the world, was flawed and destructive.

The report in question was published after digital forensic evidence and American intelligence officials insinuated involvement of P.L.A. Unit 61398 in Shanghai.

However, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry said cyberattacks are difficult to trace because they are "often carried out internationally and are typically done so anonymously."

Despite strong evidence pointing to the involvement of the People's Liberation Army, many security experts acknowledge it is difficult to know for certain where cyberattacks start because hackers access computers in a variety of locations.
