Rebecca Minkoff

This year’s lineup, according to Minkoff, was an “ode to Neil” (a very loose ode, it is crucial to note). This “ode” is lost in the midst of leather and plaid. Besides a shirt with “SPACE” on it that literally reminds us of something out of this world, not much else in the Rebecca Minkoff collection struck as being particularly other-worldly. The collection is also not very memorable, with its awkwardly fitting pants (Is that an invisible crotch bulge, I see?), Olive-Garden-waitress-type suits under dresses, and irrelevant graphic long-sleeves. The beanies that a few lucky models got to sport were about all that saved this collection. If that’s your idea of space, lady, you’ve been watching too many Hollywood science fictions.

A Détacher

It is entirely understandable that designers embrace a need to be avant-garde in their designs. It is also understandable that a unique design receives more attention. With that said, A Détacher’s ready-to-wear is indeed avant-garde and unique enough to receive extra attention. Too bad it’s ultimately for the collection’s eyesore wigs, bland onesies, and unflattering designs. The outfit to the right is specifically problematic to behold, in which A Détacher designed what appears to be a potato sack for a model with a messy hairdo… Less than impressive. The jumpers with continents as its design are also equally saddening. Nothing in the lineup could be considered a “hero” piece, it is sad to say. Nothing stood out as a hidden jewel among rubble in A Détacher’s collection. Better luck next season, guys.

Betsey Johnson

She’s back! But, not really. Betsey Johnson, against all odds, still had a show during New York Fashion Week. Johnson once designed outrageous outfits that celebrities like Nicki Minaj could appreciate. Her color blocks and crazy prints were actually adored. This year, however, her looks fell flat. Her collection is reminiscent of the 1995 film “Clueless.” Her models rocked that signature cell phone look down the runway in over-the-top workout clothes. Lots of pink, color blocks, and fake wigs. Yawn. Betsey Johnson is being too Betsey Johnson… We’re no longer impressed. Good thing it doesn’t matter anyway, considering she now only contributes her designs to department stores. What’s next?

Lela Rose

Bless the creative minds behind Lela Rose’s Fall collection, because their lineup was  as messy as their models’ hairstyle. Bizarre, overdone ruffles on an already-lace dress (Peep the disaster on the right) was one of the worst pieces of the collection. Unfortunately, this little-black-dress-gone-wrong was nothing compared to the designs-stacked-on-designs outfits other models trudged down the runway in. The print outfits either clashed in colors, had busy designs, or were draped terribly. Then, as if Lela Rose realized their looks needed to be saved, a random pink dress was thrown into the lineup that was only half acceptable. Complete train wreck. If it had not been for the vintage-looking, beige/tan dresses at the end of the show that made up for a good deal of the disaster beforehand, Lela Rose would have been number one on this list.

Jeremy Scott

Of all the weirdness at New York Fashion Week, Jeremy Scott’s fall lineup took the title for its strange, strange outfits. Not sure how “ready-to-wear” Scott’s hairy dragon outfit is, but Big Sean was not a fan of the ridiculousness that strutted down the runway that day. Scott’s collection also consists of corset-type tops, mini skirts, and man leggings, all with the most grotesque graphic designs imaginable. Scott clashed cheetah print, graphics, and a checkerboard pattern for one look. For another, he opted for checkerboard shorts, leather, and knee-high, fur leg warmers. Consider it an expression of arbitrary creativity gone wrong. Better yet, check out an LMFAO music video; you’ll see some very close similarities.
