According to the twentieth amendment to the Constitution of the United States, the president's term ends at noon eastern time on January 20. President Obama and Vice President Biden took their official oaths today, but all of the ceremonies and events associated with an inauguration will go on Monday, which is also Martin Luther King Day. According to CNN, inauguration day has only landed on a Sunday seven times.

Vice President Biden was sworn in Sunday morning by Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor as Joseph R. Biden, Jr.  after attending mass. The ceremony happened in the official residence of the vice president. Justice Sotomayor was chosen by the vice president to administer the oath. The last woman to perform a swearing in of the vice president was Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1997, according to the Los Angeles Times who got information from the Office of the Vice President. The Los Angeles Times also said there were 120 people at the private ceremony. The same source is reporting that Vice President Biden used a Bible that has been in his family since 1893.

The president started his day of major events after Vice President Biden was sworn in by going to Arlington National Cemetery to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The president was joined by the vice president and Major General Linnington, according to Roll Call. After the event at Arlington National Cemetery, the First Family went to church. According to Roll Call, who received information from the White House, the First Family went to the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church. Attending church, according to the White House, is also part of First Family's Martin Luther King Day celebration.

By 11:57 a.m eastern time, President Obama was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts in the Blue Room of the White House. According to Roll Call the president used the Robinson Family Bible. The president used his full name during the ceremony, like he did in 2009. Roll Call, who received information from the White House, reported that 12 members of the family were in the room, excluding members of the First Family itself.

CNN is reporting that the president will use two bibles during the ceremonial inauguration, one that was used by President Abraham Lincoln and one that was used by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It should be noted that the president used the Lincoln Bible during his 2009 inauguration.

CNN is also reporting that there will only be two balls Monday night and that 600,000 to 800,000 are expected to be in the National Mall as opposed to 2009's attendance of over one million. CNN could not get a cost for this year's inauguration.

The White House is reporting that before Monday's inauguration, the First Family will go to St. John's Episcopal Church. After the inauguration the president, vice president, and their wives will will be in the parade. After being in the parade, the four of them, along with the president's two daughters, will watch the rest of the parade from the president's viewing area. The first ball that evening will be the Commander-in-Chief's Inaugural Ball and the second will be the Inaugural Ball. All of this information is according to the White House.

One additional change from last inauguration to this year's is that some of the vehicles in the motorcade will be using the standard Washington, D.C. license plate. This is something that will carry on into the president's term.

During his second term, President Obama will work on gun control and is expected to take on the issue of immigration.
