Nintendo unveiled Pokémon X and Y, a brand new Pokémon adventure with a new land and of course new Pokémon to search for and catch.

For most fans of the series, the biggest development is actually the use of fully 3D animation.  The developers, Gamefreak, are replacing sprites like those used since Pokémon Red and Green in Japan, with more recent models like those from Pokémon Stadium or Coliseum.  

Unlike the last set of games, Pokémon Black and White 2, X and Y will make full use of the 3DS’s 3D capabilities. The games also appear to abandon the traditional top down perspective and instead use a third person point-of-view.

The announcement video revealed the three new starters: the grass type Chespin, the fire type Fennekin, and the water type Froakie.  The trailer also seems to include what can be assumed to be each games respective exclusive legendaries, Xerneas and Yveltal.

The titles, X and Y are a change from the usual color naming (Red, Blue, Black, White, etc.) and perhaps represent a change in direction for the Pokemon series (meaning we unfortunately may never see a Purple Version).  The game is set for a worldwide release in October 2013, and until then Pokéfan’s will have to stick to rumors and speculation about what direction the series will head in.
