One of the owners of the Brazilian nightclub that burned down killing 235 people attempted suicide while in police custody Wednesday.

Elissandro Spohr was recooperating from smoke inhalation at a Santa Maria hospital in Brazil under police guard. The Kiss nightclub owner tied the end of a shower hose to a window, and police suspect he was planning on using it as a noose. "Everything indicates he was going to commit suicide by hanging. He's emotionally destroyed," said Santa Maria Police Chief Lylian Carus.

In addition to Spohr, another owner of the club, the lead singer of the band that performed the night of the fire, and the show producer are being held by police. On Sunday the band Gurizada Fandangueira used cheap pyrotechnics made only for outdoor use inside the packed, overcapacity club. The pyrotechnics caused the ceiling to catch fire. The crowd of 2,000 people stampeded toward the only exit, but many never made it out.

Spohr's lawyer claims the club was operating legally during the time of the fire and blames the mass casualties on an inept fire department.
