Four additional years of governance under President Barack Obama’s administration officially kicked off today. The quiet ceremony took place behind closed doors in the Oval Office.

Obama reiterated his pledge to uphold the duties of his office, left hand rested on the teal vinyl cover of a bible held aloft by Michelle.

Conducting a private inauguration before holding the traditional, spectacular swearing-in is not customary. The president’s constitutionally allotted term came to an end on Sunday, Jan. 19, a day of the week deemed inappropriate for the mass of activity befitting a president’s taking office.

Flanked only by his family, Obama shook the hand of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts Jr. and thanked him at the event's conclusion. Turning towards his wife and children, the Commander In Chief delivered a succession of hugs and effervescent exclamations.

“Hey you,” President Obama said while hugging his eldest daughter, Malia Ann.

“Hey!” came her reply. “I’m so happy!”

Earlier in the day, Vice President Joe Biden participated in a similar ritual. The swearing-in took place at his residence on the grounds of the United States naval Observatory, a location chosen to serve the scheduling demands of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Following the ceremony, Biden delivered a brief message to the assemblage who gathered to view his induction. Stating his plans to visit Arlington National Cemetery in the company of the president, Biden then exited the premises, encouraging those who remained in his home to “enjoy breakfast.”

On Jan. 21, the streets of Washington, D.C. will flow with foot traffic, and these oaths will be professed once more. These unofficial inauguration ceremonies, including the widely awaited address from the president, are open to ticket-holding members of the public. Those without access to these events will be able to view the day’s proceedings digitally, as a variety of media providers have pledged streaming video of the unofficial inauguration in real-time.
