On Thursday, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un threatened to conduct nuclear tests and fire rockets at the US.

On Wednesday, The North Korea Foreign Ministry had criticized a resolution that increases sanctions and condemns the country's rocket launches. The next day, North Korea’s National Defense Commission announced that satellites and rockets will be aimed at the United States, the first threat the nation has made since Kim Jong-un became the leader of North Korea since December 2011.

Overall, North Korea has conducted two nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. United States analysts predict Kim Jong-un might test a KN-08 missile, one of the biggest missiles in the North Korean arsenal. It is estimated that they will possess over 30 nuclear weapons by 2016.

Most analysts see the announcement as a means to prevent further intervention from the United States. Other countries such as South Korea predict this threat as a serious attack.  North Korea’s diplomatic ally China supported yesterday's resolution and saw the threat as hazardous to its citizens.

This decision by North Korea indicates the new leadership is not different from the last one, which ran nuclear tests despite criticism from the international community. Like his father Kim Jong il, Kim Jong-un has refused six-party talks.
