A District of Columbia prosecutor said Friday "Meet the Press" host David Gregory would not be charged for waving around a high-capacity ammunition magazine during a segment on his show.

The Washington Post reported D.C. Attorney General Irvin Nathan wrote in a letter to NBC that although possession of the magazine would be considered illegal, prosecuting Gregory "would not promote public safety in the District of Columbia nor serve the best interests of the people of the District to whom this office owes its trust."

Nathan did point out though that the host could have made his point during an interview with National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre using different methods.

In its response to the announcement, "Meet the Press" said: "We displayed the empty magazine solely for journalistic purposes to help illustrate an important issue for our viewers. We accept the District of Columbia Attorney General's admonishment, respect his decision and will have no further comment on this matter."
