New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill Tuesday that imposes restrictions on the sale and possession of firearms and ammunitions statewide.

The New York State Assembly approved the bill Tuesday morning, the first such legislation approved in the U.S. since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Decemeber, and Cuomo signed it shortly after.

"This unfortunately required tragedies and loss of life to actually spur the political process to action,"Cuomo said.

The bill, formally known as the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act makes it illegal to possess high-capacity magazines-- only clips with seven bullets or less will be legal.

Additionally, tighter background checks and a statewide registry will be enforced, with existing gun owners being required to register their weapons with the state.

Of note, the bill also requires mental health professionals to report on patients who could credibly pose a danger to others to a mental health director who could then report the threat to the Department of Criminal Justice.

The National Rifle Association (NRA), which has previously stated its opposition to any new gun legislation, has already criticized the bill as "draconian."

President Obama is set to unveil his plan for nationwide gun legislation on Wednesday, which will likely include the recommendations that Vice President Joe Biden's panel have been working on-- including a ban an assault weapons.
