Music Recap: "GIRLS" Is Back With Some Hot New Tracks

Not because I am still in awe that the 26-year-old creator, producer and director stars in the show. Not because of the refreshingly original script. Not because it is impossible not to laugh hysterically every three minutes. Not because of the painfully awkward sex scenes that seem to take place every two minutes. Not because of the infamous one-liners (that I may or may not jot down in my iPhone notes). Not because I want to be Hannah, or Lena Dunham’s best friend (Jessa takes a close second). And definitely not because this show reflects the lives of my friends and I a little too much.
I’m excited, no - ecstatic, because of the music and how well - seemingly organically, it is played throughout each and every scene. Supervisors Manish Raval and Tom Wolfe have done a brilliant job complimenting the script with original, but also new and edgy tunes. They have also done a good job (although it makes my job a little tough) keeping the music coming! The transitions between tunes are barely noticeable leaving avid listeners like myself constantly using “shazam” and lyrics search to see which song is which and exactly when it started.
But seriously some of the best moments in “Girls” have a lot to do with the musical accompaniment. Remember season 1, episode 3 (“All Adventurous Women Do”) where we were feeling bad for Hannah as she was figuring out what to tweet after finding out Elijah (her college ex-boyfriend) is gay while Sarabeth Tucek’s “Get Well Soon” lingered in the background? And BAM - in comes Robyn’s “Dancing On My On” and some of the most awkward arm flailing and head bopping I’ve ever seen. And if that wasn’t enough dancing for Hannah, remember Jessa’s surprise wedding where she does a unique rendition of Beyoncé’s dance in the “Halo” video at the reception? Epic. In fact, the music was so good an album including music from the first season was released…
So maybe now you understand why I was so excited for Sunday night’s second season premiere. And even better, my expectations were met.
Hannah and Elijah are roommates and some of the best songs make an entrance during their apartment party. Female rapper K. Fly kicked off the playlist with her bass bumping hit, "So Fast, So Maybe."
One of the best parts of the event were the classic karaoke numbers sung by the NYC crew. Insanely stressed Shoshanna (at least I think she always is) went first with Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls."
Next was Ray and Charlie's duet, on "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals.
Before Ray and Shoshanna got into a little tiff, which was classically followed by a rather passionate make out session. Shosh practiced her air DJing with Jay Z's "99 Problems," while Marnie and Charlie awkwardly chatted about his apparently "perfect" new relationship.
"Losing You" by Solange complemented Shoshanna and Ray's talk in Hannah's bedroom.
The party was great. The episode was great. The music was great.
Here are a few more songs that lingered in the background of the season 2 premiere scenes.
"Dissolve Me" by Alt-J.
"Your Honor" by Regina Spektor (feat. Kill Kenada).
"Sweetie" by Carly Rae Jepsen.
"Hot Right Now" by Amp Live.
Vampire weekend closed out the show with an iTunes Session version of "I'm Going Down".
We're off to a great start music lovers! Be sure to check back next week to see what else the "Girls" crew is dancing, freaking, sexting and talking to.
