Politico reported that the two major group of Mayors: the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Mayors Against Illegal Guns, are preparing to take center stage in the upcoming debate over gun control during their upcoming Winter meeting on January 17 -19.

Some of the members come from the most violent cities in the country such as Gary, Ind. which had the nation's highest murder rate for a city its size.

“It is unfortunate that it took a massacre in Newtown to get to the national conversation that should’ve occurred in years past when we saw people dying in the streets of Gary and Detroit and other places,” said Karen Freeman-Wilson, the Democratic mayor of Gary, Ind.
