A mass grave was discovered alongside a river in the Syrian city of Aleppo Tuesday afternoon, where the bodies of 71 young men were found with their hands tied and gunshots to the head, according to the BBC.
It is the latest such massacre in Syria’s ongoing civil war where the UN estimates at least 60,000 people have been killed. Footage of the grave was uploaded to YouTube and was quickly picked up by other media outlets.
Rebel opposition to the government of President Bashar al-Assad put the blame on the pro-Assad militias, but the government said that the deaths were the result of acts by the “terrorists,”—the way the government refers to the rebels.
The discovery is expected to increase the number of Syrian refugees to leave the country for nearby Jordan and Lebanon. International aid officials believe that close to one million Syrians have left the country and perhaps as many as double need humanitarian aid within the country.
The U.N. special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, told the U.N. after the discovery that the country was “breaking up before everyone's eyes,” and that irreparable harm has been inflicted.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and King Abdullah II of Jordan are expected to push for a total aid package of $1.5 billion Wednesday in Kuwait in order to assist Syrians refugees and those trapped within the country.
Bloomberg has reported that U.S.’s response to the crisis has been measured because of worries that intervening would destabilize Jordan, Lebanon and even Iraq.
