The BBC reported that on Thursday, the U.K's biggest supermarket chain, Tesco, took out an ad in U.K. newspapers apologizing to customers for selling beef burgers containing various amounts of horsemeat.

The findings were revealed by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) which tested various samples of the grocer's meat and found varying amounts of horse DNA present; including one burger brand that was 29 percent horse.

While sanitary concerns were present, it was the possibility of having consumed equines that caused the most shock in the land that was the birthplace of Thoroughbred horse racing and Black Beauty.
