Honduran Ambassador to Colombia Carlos Rodriguez has resigned his post after it was revealed that his bodyguard, Jorge Mendoza, took part in a raucous Christmas party at the Honduran embassy in Bogota on December 20.

Al Jazeera described the party, which ran from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., as a "booze-fueled orgy." Mendoza and some friends allegedly picked up at least two prostitutes in the red district of Bogota and drove them in an embassy vehicle to the festivities.

Officials reported cell phones and computers stolen and rooms ransacked during the party. Bogota police chief Jose Baquero said that officers plan to question the two "contracted women" who attended the party for questioning in regard to the thefts.

Although it remains unclear whether Rodriguez himself attended the party, the Honduran Foreign Ministry demanded his resignation. According to a Ministry spokesperson, "In order to safeguard national interests and good relations with the Republic of Colombia, we asked for the ambassador's irrevocable resignation and Mr. Rodriguez stepped down, effective immediately."
