Nearly 60 people were injured in a ferry accident Wednesday as it crashed docking in Lower Manhattan, said fire officials.

The accident occurred around 8:45 a.m. at Pier 11 and sent passengers "flying" as it approached the dock.

The ferry, which shuttles commuters from Atlantic Highlands and Conners Highlands in New Jersey to Lower Manhattan, was reported to be carrying 326 passengers and five crew members.

The severity of the injuries were not immediately apparent, but passengers and bystanders reported many of the injured were carried off on stretchers.

The cause for the crash is not yet known.
