A catastrophic fire rages throughout the southeast Australian state of New South Wales. Rising temperatures such as 109 degrees Fahrenheit in Sydney today with a combination of high winds reaching 43 miles per hour threaten to push the fire further. On Tuesday afternoon residents were urged by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard to “stay focused” and vigilant, but many feared a repeat of “Black Sunday” in 2009, where high winds and temperatures pushed fires across the state of Victoria killing 173 people and injuring 500 people, as well as destroying thousands of homes.
